Picture Gallery

The Local History Society archives contain thousands of photos and slides, some which are copies from older photos or postcards, while others record the constant changes in the townscape. This gallery draws on digital copies of a selection of photos of Harpenden before the Second World War. It is divided into areas of the town, and each set follows the route of a possible walk. We have added brief captions, and there are links to more detailed articles in other parts of the website. These links will be expanded as the website grows.

There is an ongoing project to catalogue and digitise the Society's collection, which is filed in geographical and subject indexes.  This resource is open to anyone interested in helping to write the many stories and memories the photos evoke.
