Paintings and sketches of old Harpenden

Our archives contain many sketches and watercolour paintings, some original, and some copied as slides or photos.  Some paintings by Ernest Heasman (working in the early 20th century) by Frank Kitton (working in the early 20th century) and by Ernest Hasseldine (working in the 1930s) were reproduced as post-cards.  Other sketches are by unknown artists in the 19th and 20th centuries.  The pictures in this gallery are mainly around St Nicholas Church, the Cock Pond with Bowers House and Harpenden Common – the Baa Lamb trees, the dells, and some of the farms and cottages facing the Common.

  • What a lovely picture. I assume that the pub is the building on the left hand side with the red tile roof. Does anyone know what happened to the buildings with the grey slate roof? Thanks, Pat
