  • I found this book absolutely fascinating, especially as Henry Hodgson of ‘Welcombe’ was my gt-grandfather. Theodora has filled many gaps in my knowledge of life in Harpenden during the time my grandmother, Mabel, and her brothers were living in their home there. Thank you editors for your superb production. Incidentally, my gt-uncles Oswald & Hubert were ‘Bom’ & ‘Bim’, not ‘Born’ & ‘Birn’. And ‘Sidcot’, not ‘Sidcombe’ is the Quaker school near Bristol.

  • Having dipped into this account of aspects of life in Harpenden in Victorian times, I am interested to read of the number of working parties, sales and meetings to collect for various organizations. No doubt this was done by the well-to-do families in Harpenden at the time, well before the Welfare State. Congratulations to all who were involved in the production of this fascinating book.
