Local History stall attracts interest

By Rosemary Ross

We battled against high winds to set up the Local History Society stall at Harpenden Carnival - and then had a very sunny and successful day, with many interested visitors, sales of The Story of Harpenden and lots of children making Harpenden peg dolls helped by Katharine Robertson. Thanks to all the committee members who were able to help on the day, and especially to Katharine.

We had many visitors, sharing their interests in our Roman sites and finds, the origins of Cravells Road, and providing information about the dental surgery at 60-62 Piggottshill Lane which served army personnel stationed in Harpenden during WWII.  We hope to learn more about the underground air-raid shelter in the garden at 58 Piggottshill Lane.

Katharine Robertson has recently prepared teaching resources on aspects of Victorian Harpenden and how Harpenden prepared for WWII. We hope these will prove stimulating to teachers and pupils alike.
