Jarvis Brothers promotional brochure on Harpenden in the late 1930s
Scanned by Bob FLetcher, Secretary of The Harpenden Society
"The main object of this Brochure is to call the attention of those desirous of taking up their residence in this truly delightful locality to the activities of Harpenden Estates Ltd, who in the development of their properties will endeavour to preserve the natural beauties of the countryside."
Many responded, and the estate has continued to flourish - though a number of houses have been expanded almost beyond recognition, or even demolished.
It is interesting to note the very high density originally proposed for the frontages to Station Road, the first section of Lyndhurst Drive and Carisbrooke Road, whereas large plots were developed in the 1930s. In the 1950s some of the Station Road plots were used for allotments, until developed in the 1960s, as is clear from Denis Lewis's photos of Station Road in the 1950s.
