Percy English

A lifetime of service

Receiving the Insignia from the Lord Prior of St John, Earl Cathcart

In 2011 the Local History Society received the superb photograph album of the late Percy English of Hatching Green, Superintendent of the Harpenden St John Ambulance Brigade.

The album includes photos of his outstanding service over 44 years; Commendations from the Queen relating to his promotions – eventually to Commander (Brother) of the Order of St John; and other memorabilia including fulsome testimonials on his retirement.

It also includes photos of the Cadets under training, parades and events at Flowton Priory, and at work in his garden and in the garden of the Priory.

The Society is indebted to Mrs Jill Hunt, also a long-serving St John’s member, who has been looking after the album since it was forwarded on to her by Percy`s niece, Mrs Bygrave. It is available for inspection in the Harpenden local history archives.

  • A close neighbour to us on Hatching Green, I will never forget Mr. English bringing me an ice cream when I was rather ill with measles. Such a treat, such a kind and thoughtful man.

  • I had the pleasure of knowing Percy English for many years and photographed him at the VE Day celebrations held on May 7th, 1995. Percy was one of the many veterans who marched that day. He had formerly served in the Royal Artillery.

  • What an extremely long service career! Mr English sounds like an interesting character.
