Harpenden developed from a nucleus around St Nicholas parish church around 1000 years ago with small settlements in the Ends and Greens throughout the parish, such as Kinsbourne Green and Hammonds End indicating how the land was cleared. With the expansion of Harpenden in the late nineteenth century, such as the Avenues and West Common were developed. Batford was joined to Harpenden in the 1930s, having previously been in the parish of Wheathampstead.
