How to make a financial donation

Members generously contribute through regular annual subscriptions and also through the provision of their time. However, the Society needs to open up the new additional income streams so as to ensure that our objectives are not impaired.

You can make a donation to the Society in a number of ways. If you are able to Gift Aid the donation then we will be able to reclaim UK tax, currently at 25%, so adding to the value of your gift. If you pay higher rate tax, you will be able to reclaim further tax via your tax return.

All donations will be acknowledged as soon as possible by post or email. For security reasons, please do not send cash through the post. We can assure you that your name and address and any other details will not be passed on to other organisations

So if you can do so, please consider the following ways of offering your support to the Society’s activities.

Single donation by cheque

Send a cheque or a UK Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) cheque, payable to The Harpenden and District Local History Society (or HADLHS), to the Treasurer at 5 Tuffnells Way, Harpenden, Herts AL5 3HJ

  • Recipient: Harpenden & District Local History Society (or HADLHS)
  • Bank: Lloyds – Account: 23383060 – Sort Code: 30-97-77
  • Reference: ‘Regular’ + your name

Please download the Standing Order Form and, if applicable, the Gift Aid Form (Multiple).

Both forms should be sent to the Treasurer at 5 Tuffnells Way, Harpenden, Herts AL5 3HJ

Appeal donations

Like all progressive charities, the Society will be undertaking new initiatives, whether as a capital project or an increased operational activity and will be seeking donations against the cost of these initiatives.

We will prominently publicise appeals of this nature on the website and invite supporters to contribute. The precise mechanisms will be spelt out at the time but the donation methodology will be as per Single Donations above

Legacy giving

Giving in memory of a loved one is an incredibly special way to honour them and some people wish to make a donation to the Society in their wills for this purpose. Making a will is the only certain way of ensuring that your estate is administered in accordance with your wishes.

Inheritance Tax Estates over a certain level will attract Inheritance Tax currently at 40%. A legacy in favour of the church or any charity will be exempt from Inheritance Tax, and where a gift of 10% of an estate is left to the Society, the Inheritance Tax rate on the remainder of the estate would currently be reduced from 40% to 36%. Professional advice should be sought on Inheritance Tax matters

If you would like to discuss legacy giving on more detail then please do contact treasurer@harpenden-history.org.uk

If you would like to arrange a collection at the funeral service we can provide leaflets about the work of the Society for you to distribute to family and friends. Please call or email us at secretary@harpenden-history.org.uk
