Under the skilled tutorship of Lionel Munby MA of the department of Extra Mural Studies, Cambridge University, Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) classes in St Albans and Harpenden researched the origins and history of the Saxon parish of Whetehamstede, which gradually developed into the distinct communities of Wheathampstead and Harpenden. The results of this research were published in a series of illustrated booklets:

- Vol 2 New Men and New Society, C16 and early C17 – 1974, WEA
- Vol 3 Church and Chapel – 1975, WEA
- Vol 4 The Age of Independence – from the Civil War to the Industrial revolution – 1978, HPS
- Vol 5 The Old Order Changeth – C19 – 1991, HPS
- Vol 6 The Schools – 1976, WEA
- An Index was published in 2000.
