Volunteering for 20 April 2024

Our team of volunteer marshals will be very busy on 20 April, why not join them to help deliver this most exciting Local History Open Day  at the Eric Morecambe Centre on Saturday 20 April 2024 and be part of Harpenden’s History.  You will enjoy helping for a couple of hours in the morning or in the afternoon.

Background information:

To residents of Harpenden and environs who wish to support Harpenden & District Local History Society, as a thriving Harpenden society, and the community of Harpenden societies generally.

Harpenden Local History?  Surely, Harpenden doesn’t have any history prior to the building of the railway and, decades later, doubling of its population in the 1930s with the building boom making it a commuter town?  Important though they were, Harpenden does indeed have a history going back to the Romans.

Local History Society?  Yes, we have existed since 1973 and, indeed, had a museum for some years until forced to close because of commercialisation of rent about 20 years ago.  We now have a new museum in the town.

New Museum?  We now have a state of the art museum on the lower floor of the Eric Morecambe Centre in Rothamsted Park and are building up a rota of volunteers, so we can open to the public several days a week.  We are now open as a minimum every Saturday 11am-3pm, everyone welcome – check opening on our website: https://www.harpenden-history.org.uk/category/our-museum/how-to-find-us

Never heard of it!  That’s why, as well as opening regularly, we are having a Local History Open Day on Saturday, 20 April to relaunch the society, mark the official opening of the museum and the 50th anniversary of the society.

20 April: With the kind permission of the Eric Morecambe Centre we are taking over the entire building for exhibitions, children’s competition and talks.  Free entry for the public.

Other participants: Other local history societies from St Albans, Wheathamstead and Redbourn will also be exhibiting, as well as Harpenden Society, Rothamsted and TASHA/ TASHE (arts societies).   Annie Brewster, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire (in nomination) will preside.  We aim to show the history of Harpenden through maps;  in particular, over the last 200 years.

How can you help?   We will not turn away additional volunteers for 20 April at EMC to:

  • Assist in moving in and setting up exhibitions early in the morning and/or dismantling and taking down in the late afternoon; and/or
  • Act as marshals guiding the public around the building from mid-morning to mid-afternoon – we will rota this as two shifts.

And, we are also looking for volunteers on an on-going basis:

  • Further volunteers to man the museum; and
  • People with certain specialist skills to help run the society.

And, you could become a member to support the society and running of the museum.
