Harpenden Development Association
A promotional brochure published in 1935
This is one of many interesting finds among the Gerald Salisbury’s papers recently donated to the Society’s Archives by his executor. Gerald, son of the architect Stanley Salisbury, and grandson of James Wright Salisbury of Limbrick Hall, collected family photos, family history notes, annotated large-scale maps, plans and drawings from his father, uncles and aunts, with a view to giving them to the Society. This brochure is another snapshot of how Harpenden sought to attract ever more new residents – in 1935.
The watercolour painting, reproduced in black and white on the cover, is by John Frye Bourne, a young local artist at the time the brochure was published.
